"Uncle Frank" Paul Bettany, Sophia Lillis, Peter Macdissi, Margo Martindale, Judy Greer, Stephen Root, Steve Zahn and Lois Smith also star in the LGBTQ drama that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Amazon Studios has debuted the trailer for Alan Ball's LGBTQ drama Uncle Frank. The film, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is both written and directed by the Six Feet Under creator and American Beauty writer. Loosely based on Ball's life growing up in the South in the 1970s, the film is led by Paul Bettany, who plays Frank Bledsoe, a gay man reckoning with his conservative family. Frank is bullied and ostracized by his family for reasons his adoring niece Beth (played by It actress Sophia Lillis) doesn't understand. But when Beth arrives unannounced at the New York University literature professor's apartment, her eyes are suddenly opened to the real life of her smart and funny uncle who is "just the kind of person I want to be," Lillis says in the trailer. Greeted at the front door by Frank's "roommate," Peter Macdissi's Wally, the young girl who says she's "never known anybody who's gay before" soon discovers that she has actually has, both in her beloved uncle and even more shockingly, her church choir director. Their time in the city is cut short, however, after Frank gets the call that his dad has died. Beth watches Wally and Frank debate whether they'll both return to her rural Southern community before the group sets off on a journey home. With his past traumas right on his heels, a reluctant Frank must decide who he is going to be in the face of the people closest to him. "So when you told me I should be what I want to be, that was just bullshit?" Beth inquires. "You know, that conversation changed my life." The film, which also stars Margo Martindale, Judy Greer, Stephen Root, Steve Zahn and Lois Smith, is slated to be released on Nov. 25.
