Ted Lasso shoots and scores—again. At Monday night’s Emmy ceremony, the sunny Apple TV+ series picked up several statuettes, including the biggest prize: best comedy. Lead actor Jason Sudeikis, who won best actor in a comedy earlier in the night, led the speech, taking great care to thank the show’s unsung heroes, from the team handling COVID-19 procedures to the postproduction team. “This show is about good and evil, the truth and lies,” Sudeikis said. “But it’s mostly about our response to those things.” He closed his speech by poking fun at his Ted Lasso colleagues, who were surrounding him onstage and squealing excitedly about the win, and thanking his children. “Otis, Daisy, I love you very much,” he said. This was Sudeikis’s second trip to the stage. Earlier in the night, he picked up a statuette for best lead actor in a comedy, much to his own surprise. “I didn’t think I had a chance,” he said in his folksy speech. “So I’m not overly prepared, but,” he quipped, “I did take classes at the Second City.” The actor thanked his parents, the show’s cast, and its fans. (As some viewers may note, Sudeikis did not address the drama currently surrounding his personal life, including his fractured relationship with ex-partner Olivia Wilde.) “Thank you for the people that watch this show and dig it as much as we dig making it,” he said, closing his speech. “I’m truly, truly surprised and flattered.” Sudeikis plays the titular character in the series about a kindly American football coach who leaps across the pond to lead a British soccer team. The actor won the show’s second prize of the night, after costar Brett Goldstein won for best supporting actor in a comedy. “I’m really gonna try not to swear,” Goldstein said in his acceptance speech, shortly before dropping a sweet F-bomb anyway. The actor, who plays the stern Roy Kent in the series, then thanked those involved for “creating this magical thing and letting me be a little part of it.”
